Permitted Activities
Research projects: Conducting research in collaboration with German institutions
Laboratory work: Using specialized equipment or facilities at German research centers
Academic lectures: Delivering guest lectures at universities
Conference presentations: Presenting research findings at academic conferences
Research consultations: Advising on scientific projects
Study of archives or collections: Accessing specialized academic resources
Key Requirements
Official invitation letter: From the German research institution, university, or research organization, detailing:
Purpose and scope of research
Duration of stay
Facilities provided
Financial arrangements (stipend, accommodation, travel)
Academic credentials: CV, diplomas, list of publications
Research proposal: Brief description of the research to be conducted
Proof of ongoing affiliation: Letter from home institution confirming your position
Financial proof: Evidence that research stay is funded (stipend letter, scholarship, own funds)
Health insurance: €30,000 minimum coverage
Return ticket: Proof of departure plans
Duration
Maximum 90 days within any 180-day period
Strictly limited to research activities specified in invitation
Important Notes
If research requires longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit for research purposes (long-term D visa)
Guest scientist status does not permit regular employment outside research activities
Some research fields may require additional security clearances
